Children’s Christian Education

There is Sunday School at 9:00 a.m. for all children age three through High School.  Students of all ages learn Bible Stories, apply related Bible truths, and engage in age-appropriate discussion. Sunday School endeavors to support and supplement the family’s efforts to raise children as followers of Christ.  It also includes seasonal festivals and intergenerational events. Classes are taught by people who have taken the three-hour Safeguarding God’s Children training.

First Communion Class  First Communion Class is offered in conjunction with the first grade curriculum.  A three- to four-hour Eucharist Instruction Retreat will be held on a Sunday afternoon in January. The date and time will be announced

Confirmation Classes
Confirmation preparation at Good Shepherd continues to be a two-year program of faith development, providing the students with a foundation upon which to make their decision about confirmation.
Year I – is for teens in grade 8 or older who haven’t already completed Year I and/or who aren’t already confirmed.  The curriculum is a survey of the Bible.
Year II – is for those who have completed Year I with excellent attendance.  The curriculum is instruction and discussion about sacraments, the Book of Common Prayer and Hymnal, church history, prayer, and other theological topics.  Year II students are paired with Mentors, with whom they meet regularly throughout the year leading to Confirmation.

Safeguarding God’s Children is a course designed to help detect and prevent sexual abuse of children. Since its inception, instructor Pam Nolting has provided the parish many opportunities to be trained through this program. Pam has trained over 130 persons for various ministries in our Parish and School.  The Diocese of Texas has trained over 2,000 in the last year.

All Sunday School instructors, childcare providers, youth sponsors, staff, and vestry are required to complete Safeguarding God’s Children. The course consists of two segments, approximately 1½ hours each. Both sessions are required for certification.

Session I focuses on identification of behaviors

that could lead to inappropriate contact with children, as well as providing sensitive techniques to be used in discovering signs that may indicate that such contact has occurred.  The second session suggests screening and other processes for those who wish to work with our young people, and provides for procedures should any forms of boundary and/or abuse violations occur.

In carrying out the principles of Safeguarding God’s Children, background checks are required. If you have any questions regarding Safeguarding God’s Children, please contact Pam Nolting at (281) 359-4887.
